BRIEF HISTORY
The rivers around Dunnellon fed the local Timucua Indians who lived and fished along the banks in the time before European contact. Hernando de Soto, a Spaniard, was the first outsider to enter the area on his journey from Tampa to Tallahassee in 1539. He visited Chief “Ocali” in his village of the same name in search of food.

Dunnellon Township was first established as a “boomtown” during a phosphate rush in the early 19th century. Dunnellon remembers its rough and ready past during its annual Boomtown Days Festival, which draws thousands to the historic downtown area.
