Belleview, Florida

Home to historic buildings and giant oaks dripping with moss, beautiful Belleview is Marion County’s second largest city (after Ocala). Its 3,500 or so residents are proud of their independent pioneer heritage and take care to remain community minded. Each year, local policemen take underprivileged children Christmas shopping. Belleview holds many special festivals throughout the year, often on the grounds of Lake Lillian, a lovely park and community focus point. Florida’s liberal tax laws support developing businesses, and Belleview’s steady economic growth is matched by nearby Ocala, which employs additional locals in its manufacturing and industrial sector.

With its mild climate and acres of rolling hills, forests, lakes, groves, and horse farms, Belleview and the surrounding south Marion County is a great place to bring up a family.

BRIEF HISTORY
Belleview was founded in 1884, on land that was originally inhabited by Florida’s Seminole Indians. Early settler John Pelot owned most of the town’s original land, and he named the settlement in honor of his daughter Belle.

Incorporated in 1885, Belleview was an agricultural center and meeting point for the pioneering farmers who first came to Marion County. Lake Lillian, then known as Nine Mile Pond, was a community meeting point from early on, and Seminole warriors from Chief Osceola’s tribe held peace talks there with soldiers from Fort King in 1893.
